Making the Chop

So it’s been a glorious 17 months since I took the plunge and chopped off most of my hair.

Okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic. But I did get a bob, a style I hadn’t sported since I was 7 years old, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made in regards to my hair. Aside from learning the value of getting foils instead of scalp bleaching. Now THAT was a game changer.

My old hair, which I had been attempting to grow long forever, was probably nearly to the bottom of my ribs at it’s longest point; but it was brittle, uneven, and thinning at the ends from the copious amounts of bleaching and the total lack of treatments I had subjected it to over the years.

I spent a solid year umming and ahhing over whether or not I should do it, but after some drastic life changes (cue: end of relationship, moving away from my hometown FOR GOOD, basically starting a new life sans the shittiness of the last few years) I literally said “fuck it!” and walked into the first hairdressers I found and asked them to cut it off ‘ah la Lauren Conrad’.

The result? Shorter. Healthier. All one length – for the first time in YEARS. No more shitty layers to maintain. Could just tie up, but it was summer and already I noticed just HOW MUCH COOLER IT WAS. Maybe the boys are onto something, after all.

That was December 2014, and since then I’ve only cut it maybe 4 or 5 times (with most of them just being a tidy up trim by my step mum) and despite the colouring, ocean swims and low-maintainace hair care program I’ve got going, it’s still the healthiest it’s been since that fateful trip to the hairdressers in year 8.

I am notoriously lazy when it comes to styling it, but I find that I’m saving a tonne of money on shampoo and conditioner, and it takes approximately a 3rd of the time to straighten now than it used to (score!), and more often than not I can get away with that tousled-grungy-effortless look.

I know I’m a little late to the party with writing about this trend (because who DIDN’T chop their hair in 2015?!) but over a year on I can still say it’s rad and so easy to look after and yes you should throw yourself to the wind and DO IT already. You won’t regret it – I hope.

So here’s some pics of gals who style their hair much better (and more regularly) than I do and completely rock their bobs/lobs.

Enjoy!
